SMPS and NAWIC have joined forces for an exciting Women in Leadership breakfast featuring Crystal Smith, MBA, PMP, LEED AP BD+C.  Crystal has 20+ years of experience in Construction and Project Management, having worked in over 13 cities in the US and in Leiden, Holland, and the Netherlands on International Assignment.  Crystal is currently managing the construction of Duke Energy’s Charlotte Metro Tower. Crystal will share with us her experience as a woman in the A/E/C industry and how she has driven towards success.

Meet our Speaker, Crystal Smith, MBA, PMP, LEED AP BD+C:

Crystal M. Smith is Duke Energy’s Owner Representative and Construction Oversight Lead for the new 40 story tower in Uptown Charlotte.  She is responsible for construction of the Base Building (Core & Shell) which includes the above ground parking deck and the Interior Upfit which includes the lobby, amenity spaces, critical infrastructure floors, and the typical office floors.  Her role includes oversight of the Construction Management team, Environmental Health & Safety and management of the Interiors General Contractor.

Smith’s prior role was Manager of Real Estate Project Development and Project Management Office for Duke Energy. She was responsible for work planning and supervision of the Real Estate Project Developers in Duke’s Regions, including the Carolinas, Florida, and the Midwest. Project Developers drive A/E design to create interior renovation and new construction that are in conformance to the Duke Energy Workplace Standards, generate scope, schedule, and budget for O&M and Capital Projects to support all lines of business in within Duke Energy operations.

Smith earned a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering Systems from the University of Pennsylvania and master’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida.  She is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and is a LEED Accredited Professional (AP) in the areas of Building, Design and Construction. 

Smith served on the National Society of Black Engineers Professionals Executive Board from 2016-2018.    She is also an active member of the Project Management Institute, a member of the National Black MBA Association, a member of the US Green Building Council, a member of the Society of Women Engineers, and a Division Level Champion Competitor in the Evaluation Division for Toastmaster’s International.   She is an avid world traveler that now calls Charlotte her permanent home, enjoys hiking, advocating for STEM education in underrepresented communities, and all things Science Fiction in her free time.
