An often overlooked aspect of the design and construction industry is the vital role that local politics can play in successful project development. In this special pre-election season program, we’ll hear the opinions of leaders in development, general contracting, regional economics, and local government on how Charlotte’s political entities can be allies to developers, architects, engineers and builders in their work. Make plans to attend this eye-opening session that will reveal how your vote can directly affect the A/E/C industry!

 

MODERATOR:
James Mitchell, Jr., Business Development Manager, JE Dunn Construction and Charlotte City Council At-Large Representative
James “Smuggie” Mitchell Jr. is a Business Developer at JE Dunn Construction, focusing on strategic partnerships in the hospitality, multifamily, sports and aviation markets in the Carolinas. He has served on the Charlotte City Council for 15 years, including chairing the economic development committee. James takes a proactive approach to encouraging development in our community, including championing council support for projects including the renovation of Bank of America Stadium, in effect keeping Carolina Panthers professional football in Charlotte.

Ron Leeper, President - R.J. Leeper Construction, LLC
Mr. Leeper directs and manages the day-to-day operations of R. J. Leeper Construction, a full-service minority construction management and general contractor based in Charlotte.  During his ten years of service as a Charlotte City Council member, he developed a keen knowledge of community concerns and a strong awareness of community needs that now enhance the abilities of his firm to better serve the Charlotte community. 

Ron Kimble, Deputy Manager (Retired) City of Charlotte
In late 2016, after more than 40 years of public service in local government, Mr. Kimble retired from his post as Charlotte's Deputy City Manager and joined the private sector, moving into the insurance brokerage sector.  He remains involved with the City of Charlotte, lending his expertise on special projects involving economic development, hospitality, tourism and intergovernmental relations.  He is an alumnus of the University of Kansas.

Brian Leary, President Crescent Communities
Brian Leary joined Crescent Communities as president of its commercial and mixed-use business unit in 2014. In this role, he directs the company’s office, industrial and retail developments and property management across the country. Through Brian’s 22 years of experience in real estate, he’s overseen in excess of $2.5B in development.  Brian is a graduate of Georgia Tech's College of Architecture.
