DESCRIPTION: There is no doubt that trends in campus living on university and college campuses has seen major design improvements over the last 10 years.  Campus building and design has evolved away from typical institutional interiors and has headed towards creating design-saavy spaces that can now compete with off campus development and attract students away from other competing schools as well.   Our panel of experts will discuss how student life trends have changed, and what to expect in the future when designing these types of facilities.

MODERATOR:

J.R. Maxam - Preconstruction Director, Holder Construction Company

J.R. has nearly 20 years of experience providing Preconstruction Services with Holder Construction, focusing on Higher Education and the Carolinas. He has provided leadership on $2+ billion of project in the Carolinas. J.R. is a graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

PANELISTS:

Douglas Hallenbeck- Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Clemson University

Doug has 13 years of experience directing residential life on University campuses around the U.S. including Clemson University, Southern Methodist University, Oklahoma State University and Ohio State University.  He currently is the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Clemson University, and his duties include overseeing housing, dining, parking, transportation, and the bookstore on campus.

Bob T. Gunn, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Clark Nexsen

Robert T. Gunn (Bob), AIA, LEED AP is a Principal with Clark Nexsen with a most recent focus on student Life projects, in particular, student housing. As a Design Principal, Bob participates in the programming, planning, and project management of projects for select clients. Housing professionals are often tasked with managing building and renovation projects on campus. Even if you’re an expert in student housing, and can manage residences for thousands of students with ease, working with the technical side of the construction and planning process can be pretty confusing. Today's amazing residence halls are the product of collaboration between campus housing experts and talented architects. These two sides work together to create state-of-the-art residence halls that deliver optimal student experiences. Bob co-authored the Architecture Online Course Series for ACUHO-I which gives housing professionals the knowledge they need to maximize this partnership.

Wilson Jones, Project Manager, Brailsford & Dunlavey’s

Wilson is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he works extensively on facility planning and program management assignments for clients throughout the southeast. Wilson leads planning efforts for all quality-of-life facility types, including athletics, recreation, housing, union, and campus edge projects. Wilson’s experience positions him to serve effectively as a strategic advisor for his clients in determining the financial feasibility of each project given today’s funding realities.
