Take a walk back in time as you tour the historic Carolina Theatre in Uptown Charlotte on March 12, 2015. The Carolina Theatre is an historic American theater built in 1927 as part of Paramount's Publix Theatre chain. Throughout the years, the Carolina Theatre was the focal point for live entertainment in the Charlotte region. Road shows, musicals and other forms of entertainment brought such stars as Bob Hope, Guy Lombardo, Tommy Dorsey, Tom Mix, Jimmy Stewart, Ethyl Barrymore, Andy Griffith, Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Frank Sinatra and Elvis. The Foundation For The Carolinas has recently purchased the Carolina Theatre from the City of Charlotte. Currently, a design team is being put together, and will be tasked with recreating the exquisite interior details including the chandeliers, murals, stenciling and plaster work. Hopefully, adding an historic theatre organ will also be in the Theatre’s future.
Before the tour, we will meet in the lobby at the Foundation For The Carolinas building at 220 N. Tryon Street. Immediately following the tour, Curt Walton, Vice President of Real Estate & Facilities Management with the Foundation For The Carolinas, will conduct a presentation about the history of the Theatre and its future. Concluding the presentation, we will have a happy hour with beer, wine and snacks. We hope to see you there!
